NOBOYS

BY KENDYL (SHE/HER)

ARTIST BIO:

“I’m a proud lesbian who drunkenly stumbled out of the closet while working in a strip club.

Much like the act of stripping, and coming out, my art uses humor and glitter as makeshift tools to get by in a world where our experiences can feel isolating and dark at times.

I create for the lesbians, the brilliant lesbian sex workers I know, and the femmes who feel that our constructed femininity is something sacred, that only other lesbians can truly see.”

noboys as a piece:

“Inspired by the vintage Marilyn Monroe covers of playboy, where her nude image was unfortunately portrayed non-consensually in their first edition, I reimagined how her cover would have looked if it were for a lesbian magazine.

I chose an image of her reclined, smoking a cigarette, because it spoke to me as an entertainer who also frequently gets burnt out on performing femininity in a specific way.

I added the “Fully uncensored intrusive thoughts” is an homage to my OCD diagnosis that made it particularly hard for me to come out as lesbian in my younger years, and the “not intended for the male gaze” as a replacement for the playboy tagline “entertainment for men”.

Of course the rhinestones to honor not only Marilyn’s glamorous wardrobe, but to honor my fellow femmes and lesbian strippers.”
