“LESBIANS AND CATS”

Cats are one of the most misunderstood creatures out there. Dogs are ‘man’s best friend’. While cats belong to witches, the supernatural and ‘crazy’ old spinsters.
This is why the cat will always be precious to the lesbian (and vice versa). We share wavelengths. We know what it’s like to be misunderstood, to be associated with the supposed dark, seedy underbelly of femininity.

What people who misjudge cats don’t know is that the slow, gentle process of building a relationship with one is the most rewarding experience a pet owner can have. One day you are living with a stranger who will ignore you unless you’re feeding them. Months later, you realise that, somewhere along the way, you have earned this little animal’s trust.
It’s the best realization ever.
Building this relationship takes time, and above all, a respect of boundaries. The careful navigation of boundaries is something lesbians are well versed in.
From figuring out if that girl at the bar is straight or not, to how friendly the friendship with the ex should be.
Whilst not every lesbian is perfect in the art of healthy communication (the first lesbian heartbreak stereotypes comes from somewhere), the interpersonal challenges that come with lesbianism often makes us more adept at respecting and setting boundaries.
In fact, I would argue that the messiness of the first lesbian relationship, where there are no guidebooks outside of heteronormative norms, is a pivotal growing moment for many lesbians to learn the importance of communication and boundary-setting. And who has the most boundaries the human must navigate carefully at their peril? The cat.
Perhaps us lesbians love cats so much because they represent something we strive for. To be unashamedly ourselves, despite the misjudgement, and to swat at anyone who disrespects our boundaries.
Or maybe they’re just really fucking cute.

“I did what I am convinced every lesbian would do if they had the opportunity… I spoke to a cat psychic about my cat, Freckle. The results? Were kind of mind-blowing, a little bit shocking but overall a lovely experience I would recommend even to the most sceptical.
After our call, I had an interview with Mary about her work and just how long she's been doing this.”

What’s your earliest memory of feeling especially connected to animals?
My first memory was communicating with my rabbits, I’d ask them to come to me and I could feel their pains as they got older and developed ailments. I grew up in the middle of nowhere with lots of different pets, ducks, chickens, ferrets, greyhounds, snakes, lizards, sugar gliders etc.
I spent most my time outside communicating with the trees, wildlife, birds. I had very little human contact until I went to school, as there were only 7 other houses in the Hamlet we lived in and they were all old ladies mostly. I always knew animals were my calling and it was all I cared about for my future.

Was there a specific moment when you thought, “This is more than intuition”?
I think my whole life I have used to intuition to guide everything, so that has always been my driving force. Growing up in the remote countryside, wildlife would often come up to me and ask me for help. So my family and I were always taking in injured/lost ferrets, foxes, deer, birds, owls etc.. I really started to recognise and identify with the intelligence of my intuition whilst I was solo travelling around the world in my 20’s. I would get gut feelings about a place, cancel my booking due to my gut feeling twisted, then 2 days later I found out the hostel that I had pre booked in Colombia was shot up by rebels, several died and most of the backpackers had all of their belongings stolen.
I have a multitude of examples like this where my intuition has saved my life. After studying Wildlife conservation/Zoology at University, I moved to Australia and began carrying out Wildlife conservation research for WWF in Australia. I then went on the work across Central and south America, in Sloth sanctuaries and wildlife rehab centres.
It was in the wild, living in the Amazon that I truly knew I could communicate with everything around me.
How did the people around you react when you first shared this ability?
Everybody thought I was crazy! My whole family were totally unsupportive and worried about their own character being damaged when I began posting and promoting my Animal Communication as a business. I was told by a friend from my old job teaching job, (I taught Animal Sciences in an Agricultural college for 7 years before going self-employed) that they were all laughing at me and calling me delusional.
My (asleep) friends thought I’d lost the plot.. But as the months and years went on, all of my friends said ‘Well, if anyone can do it Mary, it’s you.’ I have helped all of their pets and repeated information that their animals have shown me that couldn’t have been possible.
One of my friends’ cats showed me that her dad had an irregular heartbeat and that’s why she would sit on his chest. The cat had felt the change and was really concerned. I read out all of my notes, he got booked into hospital and was booked in straight away to have a pacemaker fitted. The doctors said this could have been fatal if he had not have acted now. So, all of them 100% believe it now!
Do you think this ability can be developed by anyone, or is it innate?
100%. Everybody can do and is doing telepathy.
Especially with their pets, loved ones, friends etc. It is happening naturally. We just regard this as ‘we made it up’ or ‘coincidence’. The main thing is trusting your intuition, working the pineal gland like a muscle and developing it. Telepathy is our oldest form of communication before language developed.
All species can communicate using telepathy. This is called inter-species communication and is how our cats communicate to our dogs and how all wildlife communicate with each other. Most tribes around the world still depend on telepathy/animal communication this as it originally comes from predator tracking prey. Tribe members are able to put their hand on an Impala footprint and see the Impala in their third eye (pineal gland) and their intuition will guide them to the Impala. It is innate with every sentience being as a survival response. Humans in the western world have moved away from this as we were neve taught the truth unfortunately.
Did you struggle with the ethics of monetizing something spiritual or intuitive?
A little – but then my motive for everything is to raise awareness around how sentient and highly conscious all fauna and flora are and if I get to teach people my ways of communicating, which creates a safer space for all animals and pets. I also have 15 exotic rescue animals of my own, that would have been euthanised if I had not have given them a home. I have an Owl, snakes, lizards, frog, dogs, sphynx cat, cockroaches etc, so the majority of my earnings go straight on them!
Have you ever had to defend your work to friends, family, or professionals?
I used to when I first started out but not anymore. I don’t feel the need to make people ‘believe’ as such. I believe we create our own reality, I have always found meaning in everything, therefore every day is magical! However, my experience of reality will not be the same as another individuals. Everyone is vibrating at a certain frequency, and some people aren’t tuned in to the same frequency as me and that’s fine.
Do you have rituals or routines you do before a session to “tune in”?
Yes! I must stay grounded and connected to the meta-physical (non-tangible) over the material. I do this by meditating and practising yoga as soon as I have cleaned out all of my animals first thing! Going slow and being present has helped me a lot.
Before doing my readings;meditating/connecting with pets, I always work with crystals, 999 hertz pineal gland activation frequency, have a cup of cacao, cleanse the room before and after and alwaaays use spiritual protection! (white ball of light!) It is really important that I do a cleanse and release after each reading too or else the energies can become stuck in my physical vessel.
Do certain animals or situations feel easier or harder to read?
It depends on the animal – every pet is totally unique. Some are more guarded and less interested in communicating, just like humans. Cats are blunt and say it exactly how it is… with 0 fucks given. Horses are like talking to a Guru/Shaman, very wise.
Dogs are more people pleasey, driven by emotion and will sometimes take a while to get to the point, but all of them communicate with purity and compassion, like children and are vibrating at a high frequency, just like children.
How do you protect your own energy or avoid burnout?
I work closely with my Spirit guides – White ball of light protection. Saging the room before and after. I have to do a release cleanse after my reading as a lot of them can be very emotionally taxing/traumatic. I recently have been drinking lots of hydration salts, as I’ve noticed when I contact pets in spirit, I start to feel really nauseous as they at an even higher frequency than pets in the physical. So, some medium friends have put me onto this which has really helped!
Has this work changed how you relate to your own pets?
Yes – I am able to meet their needs much easier and quicker now. They are constantly communicating with me, even if I am not in the same town/ country as them. Time and space doesn’t exist with energetic communication/ quantum physics practices.
How do you handle clients who come in with unrealistic expectations?
95% of clients are respectful and don’t hold unrealistic expectations over their pets.
I don’t particularly enjoy it when people say, ‘Can you tell my dog to stop barking?’ ‘Can you tell them to stop being so annoying’ – Your pet is ALWAYS trying to tell you something. Mirror something back to you. Teach, warn or protect you.
They are sacred mirrors and when they are barking or reacting, it is always for a reason.
I use my intuition to gauge the owner contacting me – if something feels off, I feel it straight away. I will only work with people that align with me as I am very strict at protecting my peace these days.
What’s been the most meaningful moment in your career?
There have been many. Every reading is just as beautiful as the next.
- A horse showing me his 12-year-old rider who was being bullied/ not eating. This was why he was being severely reactive. The family were alerted, actions were put in place, and the horse was never reactive again.
- Finding a lost dog and a lost cat.
- Catching health conditions in animals and humans before it becomes a serious issue.
- Signs sent from pets in spirit to their owner are so beautiful.
- Seeing all the loved ones ( animal & human soul tribe) that pets are in spirit with.
- Helping all of the traumatised rescued animals release some of their trauma/ allow their owners to have understanding. This shifts so much energy in each animal, the owners 95% of the time will always come back telling me they’re like a totally different dog now.
